However, there comes a time when you need to convert these files back to the legacy format. Perhaps you are using an older emulator, a flashcart like the Wii SD Card adapter, or a modded console that doesn’t recognize RVZ. Or maybe you need to patch a ROM hack that only works with standard ISO files.

Here are the top issues when converting RVZ to ISO and how to fix them. 1. “Failed to open RVZ file: Invalid compression type” Cause: You are using an old version of Dolphin (pre-5.0-12000). The RVZ spec has evolved. Fix: Download the latest development version of Dolphin from the official site. 2. The output ISO is 0 bytes or smaller than expected Cause: The original RVZ was created in “chunked” mode or has corrupted headers. Fix: Open the RVZ in the latest Dolphin first. If it plays, save a new copy via File > Export > ISO – this forces a rewrite of the header. 3. “Not enough disk space” – But I have plenty! Cause: Your hard drive is formatted as FAT32 . ISO files are often >4GB (especially dual-layer Wii games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl ). FAT32 cannot handle single files larger than 4GB. Fix: Convert to a folder on an NTFS (Windows) or exFAT (Mac/Linux) drive. 4. After conversion, my USB Loader GX says “Invalid ISO structure” Cause: USB Loader GX (an old version) expects WBFS format or strict ISO 9660 compliance. Newer Dolphin exports use a raw ISO that is fine for emulators but picky for some loaders. Fix: Use WBFS Manager (UPD 2024) to convert the new ISO into .wbfs files instead. Part 5: Batch Conversion – Handling Multiple RVZ Files If you have an entire library of RVZ files, doing them one by one is tedious. The updated Dolphin does not have a GUI for batch conversion, but you can use the command line that Dolphin installs.
