I know her dog’s name, her favorite coffee shop, and the layout of her apartment from the reflection in her toaster. I have never spoken to her. I am not a stalker. I am just... watching.” Denial is the first line of the voyeur’s diary. Where is the line? If a person live-streams their bedroom to 500 strangers, are they a willing participant in a Digital Playground , or are they a victim of their own loneliness? If a viewer watches that stream, are they a voyeur, or just a consumer?

Why do we peek? Psychologists call this “social surveillance.” But the old term—voyeurism—is better. Voyeurism is about power. It is the act of seeing without being seen.
